X2 Wireless Communication Problems
Overview
If your X2 handheld controller connects intermittently, frequently disconnects, or is unable to maintain communication with the scoreboard, follow the steps below to identify and resolve common wireless communication issues.
This article covers:
- Intermittent controller connection
- Controller disconnects during operation
- Delayed scoreboard response
- Unreliable wireless communication
Quick Check
Before troubleshooting, verify the following:
- The X2 controller is powered on.
- The scoreboard has power.
- The wireless receiver has power.
- You are within normal operating range.
- No recent equipment changes have been made.
If all items above have been verified, continue below.
Issue: Wireless Communication Problems
Symptoms
- Controller connects, then disconnects.
- Button presses occasionally do not update the scoreboard.
- Communication is unreliable.
- The controller frequently returns to the Scanning screen.
- Communication problems occur only in certain areas of the facility.
Most Common Causes
- Weak wireless signal.
- Controller is operating near the edge of wireless range.
- Wireless interference.
- Receiver power is unstable.
- Receiver or controller requires a restart.
- Receiver hardware failure.
Troubleshooting
Step 1 – Move Closer to the Receiver
Move closer to the scoreboard or wireless receiver.
Test communication again.
If communication improves, the issue is likely related to signal strength or interference.
Step 2 – Verify Receiver Power
Locate the wireless receiver.
Verify it has power and is operating normally.
If the receiver loses power intermittently, communication will also be interrupted.
Step 3 – Look for Wireless Interference
Check for anything that may interfere with wireless communication, including:
- Steel structures
- Mechanical rooms
- Large electrical equipment
- Recently installed wireless devices
If possible, test communication from another location.
Step 4 – Restart the Controller
Turn the X2 controller OFF.
Wait approximately 10 seconds.
Turn the controller back ON.
Allow it to reconnect completely before testing.
Step 5 – Restart the Receiver
Power OFF the wireless receiver.
Wait approximately 10 seconds.
Restore power.
Allow the receiver to fully initialize before testing communication.
Step 6 – Test Controller Operation
Verify:
- Game clock starts and stops.
- Home score updates.
- Guest score updates.
- Communication remains stable for several minutes.
Verify the Repair
Confirm:
- The controller remains connected.
- Communication is stable.
- No unexpected disconnects occur.
- All scoreboard functions respond immediately.
- The Scanning message does not return during normal operation.
If all functions operate correctly, the issue has been resolved.
What Changed?
Wireless communication between the X2 controller and receiver was interrupted. After restoring a stable wireless connection, the controller maintained communication and normal scoreboard operation resumed.

Tech Tip
If the X2 controller repeatedly returns to the Scanning screen after briefly connecting, the issue is typically a wireless communication problem rather than a controller failure. Verify receiver power, operating range, and potential sources of interference before replacing hardware.
